Dating & Historical Context
- Dating: This elegant tableware set dates to the late 20th century (c. 1980s–1990s). The specific production signatures—including the modern sans-serif typography layout of the "Made in England" roundel emblem, the clean precision of the machine-cut melamine laminate sheets, and the popularity of the traditional cottage garden bouquet print—are definitive diagnostics perfectly matching Lady Clare lines distributed across the United Kingdom during this collectible era of country house interior trends.
- Historical Note: For nearly a century, the Lady Clare studio has remained the gold standard in formal British table protection, celebrated for bridging the gap between fine art and industrial durability. During the post-war decades, as entertaining moved from formal dining rooms to casual mid-century living spaces, they pioneered the use of premium melamine surfaces. Unlike cheap plastics or untreated cork, these mats were engineered to withstand scalding tea mugs or alcohol spills without clouding, warping, or lifting away from their sturdy wood bases. Every set was completed with a layer of premium felt baize on the underside to shield delicate French-polished mahogany and oak sideboards from scratches, ensuring these items became essential bridal registry and high-street housewarming gifts for generations of British families.
