Dating & Historical Context
- Dating: This authentic studio pair dates to the peak manufacturing window of the late 20th century (c. 1980s–1990s). The specific configuration of the factory-molded block lettering, the heavy physical weight of the cold-cast resin mineral matrix, and the traditional country house styling are definitive diagnostics tracking directly back to the classic Sherratt & Simpson production era.
- Historical Note: Based in the historic pottery and casting hubs of Staffordshire, England, the Sherratt & Simpson studio established a stellar global reputation among wildlife collectors for their hyper-realistic miniature sculptures. Unlike mass-produced hollow plastics, their workshop pioneered a dense, heavily weighted cold-cast resin technique that perfectly replicated the fine details of the artist’s clay masters. To safeguard their intricate copyright designs from high-street duplicators, the foundry carved a distinct, widely-spaced stamp onto the edge profiles of their master molds. This beautifully matched collection brings together two of their most celebrated woodland subjects—the iconic prickly hedgehog and a young deer fawn nestled securely under a canopy of English oak leaves—representing a pure slice of late-20th-century British decorative social history.
Description
An exceptionally visual, tactile, and verified authentic acquisition for country house collectors, British wildlife enthusiasts, or rustic cottage stagers, this two-piece Sherratt & Simpson set is full of rural charm. The group comprises a portly, alert hedgehog figurine covered in dense, layered quills, paired beautifully with a circular high-relief wall plaque depicting a fragile deer fawn curled asleep on the forest floor. Both pieces utilize deep tonal shading washes in their recesses to generate an exquisite three-dimensional optical depth that shifts beautifully depending on your room lighting.
Expert Identification & Core Craftsmanship Features:
- Staffordshire Studio Casting: Both pieces share the identical premium resin-mineral blend, uniform hand-painted palette tones, and signature backing style that defines authentic Sherratt & Simpson craftsmanship.
- Textured Quill Realism: The hedgehog figurine showcases hundreds of individually incised, overlapping spines highlighted with a dry-brushed charcoal wash.
- Oak Leaf Canopy: The circular plaque frames its slumbering fawn with deep, relief-moulded oak branches, complete with detailed leaf ribs and forest acorns.
- Pre-Fitted Brass Roundel: The back of the fawn plaque is completed with a smooth satin-black protective seal and a factory-anchored brass loop for instant wall mounting.
Condition Report
This vintage two-piece Sherratt & Simpson set is in good condition, showing an abundance of authentic character and displaying beautifully as a matched pair. The circular sleeping fawn plaque is in immaculate order, free from perimeter rim chips, surface scrapes, or faded pigmentation, with its brass hanging ring firmly set. The hedgehog figurine is structurally solid, rigid, and stands perfectly stable. Operational Details: The hedgehog displays an honest, clean old repair across the upper section of its front right leg joint, neatly re-bonded with a thin line of vintage amber-toned adhesive as documented in the detailed macro close-up view. This structural join is completely firm, stable, and blends smoothly into the natural incised fur texture, detracting nothing from its considerable shelf appeal. Please examine the detailed macro photos to confirm the structural repair line and verify the physical scale.
