Dating & Historical Context
• Dating: This expansive decorative collection dates precisely to 1991. The bottom of the primary display bowl features a cleanly scorched, incised craftsman pictogram seal displaying the initials "T" and "H" worked into a rooster/cockerel motif, flanked by the hand-rendered date code of "'91" and the definitive word "ASH" confirming the timber type.
• Historical Note: Wood carving and artistic woodturning saw a major design renaissance across Great Britain during the late 20th century. Based in Lancashire, elite British woodturner Terry Harvey established a wonderful reputation for choosing premium local specimen timbers—such as English Ash, Elm, and Yew—to showcase the natural complexity of raw wood grain. This complete 22-piece setup balances the structural, wavy growth rings of the solid Ash bowl with a diverse spectrum of mixed hardwood fruits. Collectors intensely seek complete, matching lifestyle ensembles by verified turners like Terry Harvey because they represent the peak of the late-century British craft revival movement.
Description
A spectacular and remarkably comprehensive statement centrepiece, this vintage 22-piece hand-carved mixed hardwood fruit collection brings an air of sculptural elegance to a dining table or sideboard tracker. The collection is anchored by a beautifully turned, shallow footed wooden charger bowl with a wide, flared structural rim. Nestled inside is a curated assortment of life-sized, highly tactile fruit figures, featuring a magnificent interconnected bunch of tropical bananas, smooth-faced apples, contoured pears with natural branch-stem details, and a rare collection of individual cocktail cherries on flexible wire hangers.
Expert Identification & Design Features:
• Mammoth 30cm Diameter Proportions: An impressive 12-inch showcase statement size, offering an authoritative dining table presence and comfortably organizing the massive 21-piece standalone fruit layout.
• Verified British Heritage: The underframe features Terry Harvey's famous hand-rendered wood-burned rooster hallmark and original vintage studio sticker, confirming its elite 1991 provenance.
• Specimen Ash Wood Base: Crafted from premium solid English Ash wood, celebrated for its bold, prominent grain contrast and outstanding natural density.
• Mixed Timber Contrast: Expertly utilizes contrasting natural wood tones to accurately replicate real fruit varieties without using artificial stains or surface paints.
Condition Report
This set is in excellent vintage condition. The turned 30cm wooden bowl sits perfectly flat, level, and structural, showing no warping, dry shrinkage fractures, or deep splitting across its grain boundaries. The individual fruit pieces are wonderfully sound; the hand-carved edges remain crisp and free from heavy drop dents, structural chips, or major gouges. The natural wire stems on the miniature cherry attachments are completely intact, flexible, and firmly seated inside the wood bodies, preserving this spectacular display group beautifully.
