Dating & Historical Context
  • Dating: This premium piece is explicitly dated to 25th August 1984 (1984.8.25), placing it firmly in the late Showa period. The combination of bold multi-faceted chisel marks and the hand-carved reverse inscription provides absolute chronological verification for discerning collectors.
  • Historical Note: The reverse side bears the rare hand-incised location mark for 阿寒湖 (Akan-ko / Lake Akan) in Hokkaido, Japan. Lake Akan is historically celebrated as the epicentre of premium Japanese artisan woodcarving, preserved by the indigenous Ainu master craftsmen and regional folk art (Mingei) movements. This powerful carving depicts Daruma (Bodhidharma), the founder of Zen Buddhism, rendered with an intense, brow-furrowed expression that symbolises Perseverance, Focus, and Absolute Resilience. Pieces from the Lake Akan artisan camps are highly sought after for their rugged, soulful execution, designed to introduce spiritual protection and good fortune into a space.
Description
A magnificent masterwork of authentic Japanese regional art, this 14-inch hand-carved solid wood Daruma plaque boasts incredible texture and provenance. Carved with remarkable confidence out of a heavy single block of timber, the artisan chose to leave exposed, angular chisel cuts across the cowl and face to create striking structural definitions that capture changing light beautifully. The reverse side proudly features the hand-carved date of August 25, 1984, alongside the signature location marking for the famous Lake Akan carving village.
Expert Identification & Design Features:
  • Verified Provenance: The reverse is hand-inscribed with the exact production date and the highly collectible "Lake Akan" regional origin mark, elevating this from a generic trade piece to a documented gallery-grade find.
  • Faceted Texturing: The intentional rough-hewn, step-cut architecture across the beard and robes perfectly embodies the rustic, honest ethos of the Japanese Mottainai and Wabi-Sabi art philosophies.
  • Substantial Proportion: Measuring a significant 35cm by 25cm, its thick profile delivers an impressive, three-dimensional geometric impact when mounted flush onto a wall or showcased on a table stand.
Condition Report
This piece is in good vintage condition. The solid wood block remains completely structural and stable, free from warping or split-lines running through the main face. The wood features a gorgeous, naturally seasoned honey patina alongside minor superficial storage dust and faint handling scuffs commensurate with its 40+ year age, all of which confirm its authentic period character. The incised kanji text and date on the underside are exceptionally sharp, clear, and perfectly legible.
