Dating & Historical Context
- Dating: This matching set dates to the 1950s or 1960s window. The underside bases feature clear, deeply impressed manufacturer stamps. The log trough planter is marked "4231 / SYLVAC / MADE IN ENGLAND" and the double trunk tree vase is marked "4230 / SYLVAC / MADE IN ENGLAND", using the classic block-capital layout typical of the factory's peak mid-century production runs.
- Historical Note: Produced by Shaw & Copestake at their famous Sylvan Works in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, the SylvaC Woodland Range remains highly celebrated by collectors of nostalgic British ceramics. While famously known for their matte-glazed green rabbits, the studio's high-gloss forest series brought natural rustic scenes directly into post-war homes. This particular variant moves away from their familiar squirrels, showcasing instead a gentle, spotted baby deer resting beside fallen logs and leafy tree trunks. Finding the horizontal trough planter alongside its corresponding twin-spout upright vase as a beautifully colour-matched set is an incredible find for pottery enthusiasts.

Expert Identification & Design Features:
- Moulded Log Trough Planter (4231): Features a wide, horizontal hollow opening designed to look like a fallen hollowed log, framed by detailed ivy leaves and a tree ring end grain.
- Double Tree Trunk Bud Vase (4230): Built with two staggered vertical openings masquerading as twin upright stumps, perfect for displaying small posies or independent stems.
- High-Gloss High-Contrast Glazes: Finished in a rich olivaceous brown and deep tree green glaze that pools wonderfully in the moulded bark details, providing a striking contrast against the soft, cream-and-beige spotted deer figures.
Condition Report
Both pieces in this set are in excellent vintage condition, presenting with remarkable preservation for domestic utility pottery that is over sixty years old. The glossy glaze layer remains bright, clear, and reflective, entirely free from chips, hairline fractures, or impact cracks across the delicate deer ears or open rims. The internal cavities are clean, dry, and free from mineral scale or water deposits. Natural, faint glaze crazing is present upon close inspection, which is customary for mid-century earthenware of this composition and serves to confirm its authentic vintage heritage. (Please see the gallery images where a physical ruler is displayed to confirm measurements).
